Created for law enforcement, by law enforcement · Since 1995

De-escalation first. Control when it matters.

MMALE — Mixed Martial Arts for Law Enforcement — is the officer safety and control system Frank Shamrock built with working officers: real situations, real video, real field research. The confidence to talk it down, and the science to control it when you can't.

The Origin

Born after class, in 1995.

MMALE wasn't designed in a boardroom. It was built on the mat, after hours, by the officers who needed it.

“This program was created for law enforcement by law enforcement officers.”

In 1995, Frank Shamrock opened his professional fighters' training program to the public. Many of the first students through the door were law enforcement officers looking for an edge to stay safe on the streets.

At the end of every nightly class, the officers stayed behind with questions: does this work on the street? When do I use this hold, this lock? Those questions became an after-class program called Training for Law Enforcement.

The officers brought the situations they'd faced on duty — violent gang encounters, drug busts, felony warrant apprehensions — along with video. Using the science of the complete fighting system, they worked out solutions together, in real time. This was in-the-field research, done by the people who live it.

That program grew into MMALE, and has since served thousands of law enforcement agencies around the world — saving hundreds of lives: the lives of those who serve and protect, and those being protected.

How we know it works

  • Built from real officer situations and real field video — not theory
  • Refined through nightly in-the-field research with working officers
  • Based on the science of the first complete fighting system
  • Proven on the streets — and in the courtroom
  • De-escalation first: avoid the confrontation before it starts

The Problem

Officers train to fight.
They need to train to de-escalate.

Most academy defensive-tactics training teaches force. It rarely teaches the moment before force — the read, the words, the body language, the redirect that ends a confrontation without one. In the body-camera era, every action and interaction is recorded — and scrutinized by the public and by legal professionals looking for liability.

MMALE fills that gap: a comprehensive approach focused on the mind, body, and spirit of everyone involved — lowering liability for agencies and officers alike.

The Liability Gap

Force Is Expensive. Options Are Not.

One bad encounter costs an agency lawsuits, headlines, and public trust. Officers trained to de-escalate first create fewer use-of-force incidents — and a documented, professional training system is your agency's best defense.

The Training Gap

Technique Without Context

Traditional DT teaches moves. MMALE teaches encounters: mental and physical preparation before contact is ever initiated, situational awareness, verbal calming and redirection — and science-based control only when the situation escalates.

The Confidence Gap

Fear Escalates. Confidence De-escalates.

Officers who know they can control a situation physically don't panic into force early. MMALE builds the calm, capable presence that keeps everyone — officer and civilian — safer.

“Even if I won, I would lose.”
— Frank Shamrock, 5-time world champion

As a famous professional fighter, every confrontation outside the ring was a liability Frank couldn't win — so he became as skilled at de-escalating fights as he was at winning them. He never fought a civilian. That is the skill MMALE teaches your officers.

The Program

What MMALE is

MMALE is a complete officer safety system — not a collection of techniques. Our entire system is based on de-escalation of physical interactions: first avoid the confrontation, beginning with mental and physical preparation before contact. Only if the situation escalates do we use proven methods of control and restraint that keep all participants safe.

Mind

Situational Awareness & Reading

The encounter starts before contact. Officers learn to read body language, spot pre-attack indicators, manage distance and positioning, and stay mentally present under stress.

De-escalation

Verbal Control & Redirection

Calming techniques, verbal redirection, and the confident presence that lowers the temperature. The professional fighter's discipline: the best outcome is the fight that never happens.

Body

Control, Restraint & Use-of-Force Science

When words aren't enough: science-based control holds, restraint and handcuffing positions, ground control, and team tactics — proven to work on the streets and in the courtroom. Built for real bodies, real duty belts, real streets.

Spirit

Warrior's Code Preparation

Mind-body-spirit preparation for the job: managing fear, making clear decisions under pressure, and carrying yourself like a protector — not an aggressor.

Professionalism

Liability-Smart Training

A proven curriculum that avoids physical confrontation unless absolutely necessary — training that looks professional on camera and stands up after the fact, protecting officers and agencies alike.

Officer Safety

Everyone Goes Home

The system's goal is simple: the officer goes home safe, and the person being protected goes home safe. Control without injury is the highest skill.

Track Record

Three decades. One lineage.

MMALE didn't appear overnight. It grew out of SODCS — the Science of Officer Defense and Criminal Submission — refined with working officers over decades before taking its modern form.

1995 — The After-Class Program

Frank opens his pro fighters' training to the public; officers stay after class with street questions. Training for Law Enforcement begins — real situations, real video, real-time solutions.

2000 — Officers Training

Officers are training in the system. Hundreds learn voluntarily, and the word spreads department to department.

SODCS — The Foundation

The Science of Officer Defense and Criminal Submission becomes the program's working identity — Striker Sports badge, real cases, real video, real field experience.

2009 — The Study Complete

Frank completes his formal study of mixed martial arts. MMALE is written as a complete, original program — first for the Stockton Police Department.

Today — MMALE

Mixed Martial Arts for Law Enforcement: a modern officer safety system serving thousands of agencies, with hundreds of lives saved through de-escalation-first training.

The Founder

Why a fighter teaches cops.

Professional fighters live under more liability than almost anyone: every move can be judged in court. So the great ones learn to de-escalate — genuinely, effectively — because a fight avoided is a career protected. That is exactly the officer's job.

A Note From Frank

My promise to your officers

Dear fellow protector,

I got paid to fight for 16 years — and I never fought a civilian. Not once. My hands were too valuable and the liability too great, so I learned something most fighters never bother with: how to end a confrontation before it starts.

Your officers carry that same liability every shift, with a body camera recording every second. They deserve more than techniques. They deserve options — and the confidence that comes from knowing they can handle whatever happens.

That's what MMALE is. We built it with working officers, from real situations and real video, and it has saved hundreds of lives — officers and civilians alike.

Bring it to your agency. Your officers will go home safe — and so will the people they protect.

FAQ

Common questions.

Is MMALE a martial art or a police training program?

Both — and that's the point. MMALE takes the science of mixed martial arts and builds it into a professional law-enforcement training program: de-escalation first, control and restraint when necessary, all aligned to officer safety and agency liability.

Who teaches the seminars?

Frank Shamrock or a senior MMALE-certified instructor, depending on your agency's size, location, and schedule.

Can our own DT staff get certified to teach it?

Yes — that's the instructor certification pathway. Your staff trains with us, earns MMALE instructor certification, and teaches the system in-house under license.

Does MMALE replace our current DT program?

It can supplement or replace it. Many agencies run MMALE alongside existing training; others adopt the full licensed curriculum. We'll scope the right fit in your briefing.

What does it cost?

Pricing depends on agency size, format, and travel. Request a briefing and we'll put together a proposal for your situation.
